The international conference “Advancing the Blue Economy Through Gender Equality” took place in Malmö from 19-21 May 2025. This truly international event was organised by the World Maritime University in partnership with REDO Lookout, Lloyd’s Register Foundation, and COST Action BlueRights, and supported by the International Maritime Organization. For more information and the programme, see: Homepage – Advancing the Blue Economy Through Gender Equality

The BlueRights Chair Anna Petrig had the opportunity to open the session on “Human Rights and Well-Being” with a keynote, offering reflections on the – often still neglected – social dimension of the Blue Economy. It was very interesting, enriching, and at times also moving to listen to the panelists of the session, Gustavo Abdiel Aguilar-Miranda, Christalyn Delos Reyes Chiong, Kulsoom Jafri, Dyhia Belhabib, PhD, and Ellen Johannesen.

While the oceans are attracting growing attention, people at sea still receive little consideration by stakeholders, scholars and the public at large. The frequent violations of their most basic human rights, which safeguard their life, liberty and health, often go unseen and unpunished.
