BlueRights WG3 – The Right to Health event

January 23 @ 08:00 - 17:00

The COST ActionBlueRights held the launch event on Thursday 23 January 2025 in London. The members of Working Group 3 of the project, who share an interest in the protection of the right to health at sea, held their first hybrid meeting to exchange ideas on the issues to be explored within the mandate of the WG and future activities. The members of WG3 combine a diverse background of academics, practitioners and persons who worked as seafarers themselves. WG3 (led by Sofia Galani) consists of three sub-working groups:
– SWG1 (led by Laura Carballo Piñeiro and Eka Siradze) focuses on the living and working conditions of employees at sea;
– SWG2 (led by Momoko Kitada and Senka Šekularac-Ivošević) focuses on the wellbeing and mental health of all persons at sea, including seafarers, passengers and migrants; and
– SWG3 (led by Arron N. Honniball and Olesia Gorbun) focuses on the protection of the right to health during crises, such as pandemics or increased pirate attacks, or conflicts, such as during times or in areas of armed conflict.

A number of activities relevant to the work of WG3 will be advertised for 2025 and 2026. To follow the activities of WG3, follow us here on the BlueRights | LinkedIn page. To become a member of the WG, visit the BlueRights COST website (https://lnkd.in/d_pmXa7z). We are keen to hear from international or national stakeholders who may want to be involved in the activities of WG3.

COST Action CA23103

While the oceans are attracting growing attention, people at sea still receive little consideration by stakeholders, scholars and the public at large. The frequent violations of their most basic human rights, which safeguard their life, liberty and health, often go unseen and unpunished.
