Why does gender equality matter for the future of the blue economy?
This blog post examines gender-based discrimination in the maritime sector as a human rights issue, highlighting barriers such as low employment, unequal pay, harassment, and exploitation. Drawing on discussions at the World Maritime University, it explores how governments, companies, and maritime stakeholders can move from formal commitments to gender-responsive policies and practice. The post argues that sustainable ocean industries cannot be built without safer, fairer, and more inclusive conditions for all those working at sea and across the maritime sector.
