60th Anniversary of the Covenants: Bridging Rights Gaps for Vulnerable People

September 18, 2026

Twenty years after the adoption of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, this high-level panel will take stock of what the “Seafarers’ Bill of Rights” has achieved, where implementation gaps remain, and how the Convention can respond to the changing realities of maritime work. Bringing together voices from international organisations, seafarers’ unions, shipowners’ associations, civil society and academia, the discussion will examine the MLC’s negotiation history, the gap between promise and practice, and practical ways to strengthen protection for seafarers in the decades ahead.

Expected Outcome:
The panel discussions will be documented and published as an open-access proceedings volume, providing a lasting reference for scholars, practitioners and policymakers working on the future of maritime labour governance.

The event is open to faculty, students and researchers of the World Maritime University.
